Encyclopedia Britannica is the oldest English language encyclopedia. Its online version, with over 120,000 regularly updated articles, can be accessed for free; however, only a portion of any article is available without a subscription. The student version allows the user to differentiate any article into 3 reading levels: elementary, middle, or high school. Features include: suggested search topics which appear in menu format as the user types in the search box; results displayable by content type; links to images, videos, and related content; the ability to save and tag articles; and for teachers, the capacity to incorporate an article into the lesson plan builder tool. Though any given article on mythology may be brief, this database excels in its links to related articles and resources. It is an excellent choice for ready reference questions and the initial phase of deeper research.

“The differentiated instruction and PreK-12th grade Common Core content-rich, lively material make Britannica School a highly recommended database that is relevant in the digital age.”
--School Library Journal, February 2013

This subscription database is part of a package of very visually engaging and user friendly databases, with displays that look more like a website than a database. It allows students to search for vetted information in a variety of formats including academic journals, magazines, reference articles, news articles, critical essays, plot summaries, websites, audio clips, videos, and images. Advanced search capabilities allow the user to limit search parameters in a variety of ways. Other features include: content standards by country, state, content area and grade level, with live links to resources within them; text-to-speech and translation capabilities; and search assistance with “Did you mean?” prompt. For the purposes of mythological research this tool would be useful for ready reference. For in-depth research projects, it would serve as a springboard. The Gale Virtual Reference Library made the Library Journal best databases list in 2011.

This resource differs from other databases in that it can be tailored to meet the needs of users by choosing specific digital titles rather than prepackaged bundles. The titles of interest here are Gods, Goddesses, and Mythology, and Exploring Ancient Civilizations, which were both updated for 2014. The user interface is very simple; users can opt to browse from one of the subscribed titles or use the prominent search box for keyword searching or more advanced searching. In browsing mode, several buttons are displayed: articles, drawings and diagrams, photographs, subjects, research tools, and glossary. Clicking the subjects button in the Gods, Goddesses, and Mythology resource, users can refine their browsing to deities and mythological beings, types of myths, people and cultures, or worship and ritual. The scope of information is very comprehensive, including both major and more obscure mythological figures from around the globe. Articles are written in a straightforward manner appropriate for middle and high school, are well-vetted, and are lengthier than in many other databases. Other selling features include lush illustrations and maps, highlighting, cross-referencing, further reading suggestions, many research tools such as citation help, notetaking, and bookmarking, and a link-up with Google translate.

“Designed to meet the needs of standard middle- and high-school research assignments and curricula, and easily customizable for specialized programs or populations, this adaptable and accessible digital library will be of interest to public libraries and secondary-school library media centers.” --Booklist, 2007
